In Reception we carry on all the excellent learning that has happened in our Nursery. We also have a number of children that come from a wide range of nurseries and preschools in the local area, this gives the opportunity for children to build on old friendships but make some new ones too! We become our own Reception team and work to look after each other and our fabulous school.
At James Cambell, we provide a stimulating, caring and enabling learning environment where children are valued, feel safe and can thrive to become independent learners. Children experience learning which is tailored to meet their needs through whole-class, teacher-led, small group and one-to-one sessions.
A phased induction at the beginning of the year allows us to support your child’s personal, social and emotional development. All children are encouraged to develop positive relationships with their peers and with adults at school, which will help them to settle quickly. The phased induction allows us to spend more time with your child in these early stages so that we can support them in understanding and following the rules of the classroom and the whole school.
Through play, and with the support of adults in class, children explore and discover ideas, skills and concepts. The children are encouraged to be problem solvers and may repeat ideas they have thought of to build on knowledge, the children are fabulous at thinking of new ways to do things! As well as learning through play and child initiated activities, the children also work closely with the adults through adult directed activities. We may introduce a new skill to build on or teach the children some new facts about a subject. The most important factor is to create an exciting and engaging curriculum and foster that love for learning. If we can do this is in nursery and reception, then we can take this attitude through to the rest of our school life!
In Reception we also learn the important skills of reading, writing , handwriting and mathematics as short lessons.
Daily phonic sessions using the RWI Phonics Scheme which will support your child to learn letters and sounds and they will learn how to apply this knowledge to both their reading and writing.
The children in Reception receive a Guided Reading book each week to read with their adult, a reading record is provided for the teacher to share the learning intention with the adult and for the adult to comment on how their child is reading at home. Both Nursery and Reception have book boxes where adults and children can choose books to take home and share.
We expect children to be respectful and well-behaved. Your child will learn how to care for each other, the environment and living things. They will learn to be respectful of other’s needs, beliefs and cultures and they will have opportunities to participate in celebrating cultural and religious festivals and learning about the diverse languages spoken within the school.
Your child’s year with us in Reception is a very important and exciting time as they will develop the necessary skills needed for future learning. Your child’s physical development and language and communication skills, will be developed and they will also learn how to use a range of technology to support their learning.
Most of all we encourage and support children to become confident and independent learners. We work to build strong partnerships with parents so that we can develop your child’s education together. We want your child to be happy and have a positive learning experience where they feel nurtured and supported and where we can have lots of fun learning together!
